About my teaching:
I love teaching Chinese as Chinese is a very beautiful language which presents itself in rich images and imagination. It transmits our thoughts. Each Chinese character has its own meaning and most of the nouns and verbs are combined with two Chinese characters which forms a profounder meaning. From there, I guide my student to explore the language through their own imagination, to understand the language in the perspective of Chinese way of thinking and to explain how cultural influence reflects on the language itself.
I am fluent in English and I am now learning French at upper intermediate level. I am competent to compare the similarities and differences of the grammar structure between the mother language of my students and that of Chinese in order to draw their attention to the unique pattern of Chinese grammar. Following a course being well structured to enable the student to master grammar step by step is crucial for the student to make his/her success in long term. I follow the approach of progressive grammar integrated into interactive activities in giving Chinese courses.
I have made a lot of effort in developing multimedia programs with photographic images to initiate interactive actives in the class. Not only it is more interesting to learn with photographic images, my students can make liaison directly between the images and the language itself without going through translation process. My custom made multimedia program goes hand in hand with the professoinal textooks used at local universities. In order to meet the need of individual students, I don't absolutely follow the textbooks. However, I make good use of its well developed exercises to enable my students practise Chinese in a holistic approach when it is necessary.
Therefore, although my courses follow academic approach which are welcomed by aggressive learners, they are also appealing to those who wish to learn Mandarin simply for pleasure due to the multimedia features I add on. I am flexible and I adjust to the need of individual student whenever it is necessary.
Driven by my enthusiam of teaching, I have made research on different theories of education such as space repetition, mnemonic and apply them to my teaching.
